Jesus said, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” Lk 13:24

C.S. Lewis wrote a remarkable book The Screwtape Letters, where Screwtape, a senior devil, writes his recommendations to his nephew, a junior tempter named Wormwood, who is to discreetly distract man from God. In one place an experienced devil gives the following advice, “You are anxious to be able to report spectacular wickedness. But do remember, the only thing that matters is the extent to which you separate the man from the Enemy. It does not matter how small the sins are provided that their cumulative effect is to edge the man away from the Light and out into the Nothing. Murder is no better than cards if cards can do the trick. Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one – the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.” When C.S. Lewis was praised for The Screwtape Letters, because it was thought that it was the result of his long study of theology, he pointed out that the letters were the result of his own experience of temptation.

Are you cautious when meeting others? Are you being carried away by a flow of duties? Do you review your walk on the path of love in your regular examination of conscience?

“Live this moment as you would like the Lord to find you at the last moment of your life. Then you don't have to worry about anything.” Thomas Kempis
