The Cross on the Road

The Cross on the Road between Niederbronn and Reichshoffen

For the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer, the cross at the side of the road to Reichshoffen represents a precious witness to their past.

As a toddler already, Elizabeth asked her mother here: “Why have they crucified our Savior?” Her mother responded: “My child, our sins have done this.” From then on, Elizabeth constantly tried in her daily life, to do what pleased God and to avoid what displeased Him. She opened herself more and more to the mercy of God and longed to make it known to all.

During work on the fields, Elizabeth frequently knelt down before this cross. At the age of 15, after a long period of struggle, she perceived the call to consecrate her life totally to God.

Elizabeth often looked at the crucified Christ on the cross. Contemplating this helped her to grow. She discovered God’s love for the world around her.

How far is our love for God from the love He has for us. He died to open heaven for us – and that, out of pure love. (Mother Alphonse Marie)

For reflection:
==> What does it mean “to contemplate the cross”?
==> In times of “failure” do I turn to God, and remember His love?
==> What does it mean to me to make the Sign of the Cross?
==> What am I worried about?
==> Do I entrust my worries and concerns to Jesus, who carried all the sufferings of the world?
